In the 60's it was accessed to other coastal towns by Highway 200. It's
coffee shipments began going by truck instead of boats. Tourists began
to discover the town and the surfers found its beaches. Playa Zicatela, one of Puerto's many beaches, is considered one of
the world's main surfing
beaches. Two world championships are held there each year. ESPN's
X-Games now return annually for the spectacular surf and have called
Puerto one of the best waves they have competed at. Not for the faint at
heart, when the waves are big the water is for experts only.Fiestas in November are very unique indeed. Surfing, fishing, beauty contests, traditional dancing, concerts including the Oaxacan Symphony and culinary arts are but a few. In December there are also dances, fireworks, bullfights and cockfights.
Car rentals and taxi's = Besides Budget Rent A Car, located in the lobby of Hotel Posada Real, in Fraccionamiento Bacocho (the real upscale community in Pto.) there is a much cheaper Safari rental (Volkswagen jeep) located very nearby. The taxi's are very reasonable and there are plenty o them.
Libraries, we have two, the newly created I F O P E (international friends of Puerto Escondido) located in Fracc. Rinconada, between Bacocho and the Municipal Agency, which is near the center of town.
The Temperature does not change much over six to eight degrees year round. It ranges during the days from 84=92 and nights 68=76.
